These are the types of wildlifewatching experiences which are marketed as adventure tourism. 3. Remoteness is characterised by difficulty of access. Prior skill requirements provide an indirect measure of risk. For these parameters, the differences between individual products within each activity subsector generally outweigh the differences between subsectors, so the distinction between subsectors is weak. The same subsector may include tours which offer first ascents, descents or traverses under dangerous and difficult conditions; and tours which include a day’s training for complete novices in comparative safety.

Rather little of the published research literature in adventure tourism, however, examines the global geography of the adventure activity concerned (Buckley, 2006a; Gibson, 2008). The geographies of mountain biking and ice climbing in North America have been described by Schaefers (2006) and Johnson and Godwin (2006), respectively. The global geography of commercial horse riding was outlined by Ollenburg (2006), mountaineering tourism by Hales (2006), whale watching tourism by Hoyt (2000) and shark watching tours by Carwardine and Watterson (2002).

The geography of adventure tourism is not independent of other sectors. Results presented above are merely a first sample of the kind of geographical data and analysis potentially available for the adventure tourism industry. The main aim is simply to show that a geographical approach is useful and indeed long overdue. Visitor statistics identifying countries of origin and destination provide only part of the picture.
